Amantadine Hydrochloride capsule

What is it used for?

AMANTADINE is an antiviral medicine. It is used for the prevention and treatment of a specific type of flu called influenza A. It will not work for colds, other types of flu, or other viral infections. This medicine is also used to treat Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders.

What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • glaucoma
  • depression or other mental illness
  • eczema
  • heart failure or circulation problems
  • kidney diseases
  • liver diseases
  • seizures
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to amantadine, rimantadine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How is this medicine should be taken?

This medicine should be taken orally accompanied with a full glass of water. It should be taken at the regular intervals. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed. Take all of your medicine as directed even if you think your are better. Doses should never be skipped; neither should you stop the treatment course prematurely.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine by children. While this drug may be prescribed for children as young as 1 year old for selected conditions, precautions do apply.

Patients over 65 years old may have a stronger reaction and need a smaller dose.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.

What to do if I missed a dose?

If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for the next dose, only that one should be taken. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?

  • alcohol
  • bupropion
  • quinidine
  • quinine
  • some diuretics
  • some flu vaccines
  • some medicines for cold or allergies
  • stimulants
  • sulfamethoxazole; trimethoprim
  • thioridazine

This list is not all-inclusive and may not describe all possible interactions. Give your health care provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you are using. Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine.

Is there anything I should pay attention to while taking it?

Let your doctor or health care professional know if there is no improvement to your symptoms.

You may experience drowsiness or dizziness symptoms. You shouldn’t drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how exactly this medicine affects you. Do not stand up or sit up quickly, especially if you are a senior patient. This is to reduce the risk of possible dizziness or fainting spells. Alcohol may cause interference with this medicine’s effect. Refrain from using alcohol at all costs.

If you are taking this medicine for the treatment of Parkinson's disease or a movement disorder, you should be careful. Your daily activities should only be increased slowly as your condition improves. You should never stop taking this medicine abruptly because you may develop a severe reaction as a result.

You may get dry mouth or eyes, or blurry vision while taking this medicine. Try sugarless gum or sugar candy, and drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. Brush and floss your teeth regularly and carefully to avoid teeth and gum problems. You may want to wet your eyes with lubricating eye drops. Talk to your doctor if these symptoms become a problem.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:

  • allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching or hives,face, lips, or tongue swelling
  • issues with breathing
  • changes in vision
  • depression, mood changes
  • difficulty passing urine
  • feeling faint or lightheaded
  • fever
  • hallucinations
  • irregular, fast heartbeat
  • mouth sores
  • seizures
  • swelling of the hands or feet
  • unusual stiffness, tremors

The side effects listed below usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):

  • anxiety, irritable, nervous
  • constipation or diarrhea
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • trouble sleeping
  • unusually tired

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach.

This medicine should be stored at the room temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
