What is it used for?
CLOPIDOGREL helps to prevent blood clots. It reduces the chance of having a heart attack or stroke for people who have already had one in the past. Clopidogrel can also decrease the chance of a heart attack or stroke in certain high-risk groups.
What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of the following conditions:
- bleeding disorder or hemophilia
- liver disease
- recent surgery or trauma
- stomach or intestinal ulcers
- an unusual or allergic reaction to clopidogrel, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- breast-feeding
How is this medicine should be taken?
Take clopidogrel tablets orally. Tablets should be swallowed accompanied with a drink of water. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed.
Contact your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care might be necessary.
Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.
What to do if I missed a dose?
If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for the next dose, only that one should be taken. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.
What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?
- aspirin
- blood thinners such as warfarin or enoxaparin
- antiinflammatory drugs such as NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen)
- cilostazol
- dipyridamole
- DHEA
- doxercalciferol
- feverfew
- fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) supplements
- garlic
- ginger
- ginkgo biloba
- horse chestnut
- fluvastatin
- phenytoin
- prasterone
- ramelteon
- tamoxifen
- ticlopidine
- tolbutamide
- torsemide
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine, causing undesired consequenses. Check with your physician or health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What should I watch for while taking this medicine?
Pay regular visits to your physician to undergo regular checks of your progress. You should never stop taking clopidogrel except if your prescriber specifically advises you to do so.
It is possible that you will bleed more easily and that it may take longer to stop any bleeding during the treatment course with clopidogrel. You should report any unusual bleeding to your prescriber.
Always consult with your prescriber or health care professional prior to taking any non-prescription pain relievers. You shouldn’t take aspirin, aspirin-containing products, or antiinflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (e.g, Motrin), ketoprofen, naproxen (e.g., Aleve) unless specifically directed to do so by your physician.
If you are going to have surgery or dental work, inform your doctor that you are taking clopidogrel.
Does this medicine have any possible side effects?
The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:
- black, tarry stools
- blood from vomiting
- blood in urine or stools
- nosebleed
- red or purple spots on the skin
- skin rash or itching
- stomach pain
- difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or tightening of the throat
- fever
- sudden weakness
- swelling of your face, lips, tongue, hands, or feet
- unusual bleeding or bruising, or pinpoint red spots on the skin
- unusual rash, allergic reaction, or hives
- unusually heavy menstrual bleeding
The below side effects usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):
- diarrhea
- indigestion (heartburn)
- mild stomach upset
Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.
Where should I store it?
Keep it out of the children’s reach in a container that can not be opened by children.
This medicine should be stored at the room temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
