Buspirone tablet

What is it used for?

BUSPIRONE is used to relieve certain states of anxiety. It is chemically different from the other medicines for anxiety treatment and has little no effect at all on the mental alertness. Neither does it produce any dependency problems.

What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?

Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:

  • if you are currently receiving other medications for the treatment of anxiety
  • liver disease
  • kidney disease
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to buspirone, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding

How is this medicine should be taken?

Take it orally accompanied with a glass of water. This medicine may be taken with or without food. To ensure that the effect of this medicine is always the same for you, you should take it either always with or without food. Your doses should be taken at the regular intervals. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed. You should never stop taking this medicine prematurely unless your doctor specifically advised you to do so.

Contact your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care might be necessary.

Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.

NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.

What to do if I missed a dose?

If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for the next dose, only that one should be taken. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.

What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?

This medicine should never be taken with any of the following drugs:

  • MAOIs like Carbex, Eldepryl, Marplan, Nardil, and Parnate
  • procarbazine

It may also trigger possible interactions with the following:

  • diazepam
  • digoxin
  • diltiazem
  • erythromycin
  • grapefruit juice
  • haloperidol
  • medicines for mental depression or mood problems
  • medicines for seizures like carbamazepine, phenobarbital and phenytoin
  • nefazodone
  • other medications for anxiety
  • rifampin
  • ritonavir
  • some antifungal medicines like itraconazole, ketoconazole, and voriconazole
  • verapamil
  • warfarin

Provide your physician with a list of all the medicine, including herbs and non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements that you are using. Do let them know if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use any of the illegal drugs or drinks with caffeine or alcohol. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine, causing undesired consequenses. Please always consult with your health care professional prior to stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking this medicine?

Pay regular visits to your doctor or health care professional to undergo checks on your progress. It may take 1 to 2 weeks before your anxiety gets better.

You may experience drowsiness or dizziness symptoms. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how this drug affects you. Do not stand up or sit up quickly, especially if you are a senior patient. This is to reduce the risk of possible dizziness or fainting spells. Alcohol can make you more drowsy and dizzy. Refrain from using alcohol at all costs.

Does this medicine have any possible side effects?

The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:

  • blurred vision or other vision changes
  • chest pains
  • confusion
  • difficulty breathing
  • feelings of hostility or anger
  • muscle aches and pains
  • numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
  • ringing in the ears
  • skin rash and itching
  • vomiting
  • weakness

The side effects listed below usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):

  • disturbed dreams, nightmares
  • headache
  • nausea
  • restlessness or nervousness
  • sore throat and nasal congestion
  • stomach upset

Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.

Where should I store it?

Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach.

Store at the room temperature below 30 degrees C (86 degrees F). Protect it from the light. Keep container tightly closed. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
